Information on Leather Jackets and Nemetodes
The insect often called a "leatherjacket" is the larval stage of crane flies (often known as daddy longlegs), especially species like Tipula paludosa.
What it is:
- A leatherjacket is a grey-brown, tough-skinned grub
- It lives in the soil and has a leathery outer skin (hence the name)
- Found commonly in lawns, especially in damp conditions
What it does to a lawn:
- Feeds on grass roots and stems, weakening the turf
- Causes patchy, yellowing or dying grass
- Heavy infestations can lead to bare spots
- Attracts predators like birds, which may peck and tear up the lawn while feeding on them
In short, leathe1jackets are underground lawn pests that damage grass by eating its roots.
Best treatments:
- Biological control (most effective): Apply nematodes such as Steinemema feltiae in early autumn or spring. These microscopic worms infect and kill the larvae.
- Good lawn care: Keep grass healthy with correct feeding and watering so it can recover from damage
- Reduce egg-laying: Avoid overwatering in late summer when adult crane flies lay eggs
- Physical control: In small areas, you can lift turf and remove larvae or encourage birds (though this can damage the lawn futher)
In short, leathe1jackets are root-feeding lawn pests, and nematodes are the most reliable and environmentally friendly way to control them.
Why Use Nematodes?
Beneficial nematodes are natural pest controllers. They:
- Kill soil-dwelling pests like grubs, vine weevil larvae, fungus gnat larvae, and cutworms
- Reduce the need for chemical pesticides
- Are safe for humans, pets, plants, and pollinators
- Work quickly-often killing pests within 24-48 hours
- They're especially useful in lawns, vegetable beds, and potted plants
How They Work
Nematodes actively seek out pest larvae in the soil. Once inside:
- They release bacteria that kill the host
- They reproduce inside the pest
- New nematodes spread to find more targets
Apply at the Right Time
Best used in spring or autumn when soil is moist and temperatures are mild (typically 10-25°)
Apply in the evening or on a cloudy day (UV light kills them).
Prepare the Soil
Water the soil before application
Ensure it's moist but not waterlogged
Mix and Apply
Mix nematodes with water (follow package instructions)
Apply using a watering can or sprayer
Keep the mixture agitated so they don't settle
Aftercare
Water the area again to help them move into the soil
Keep soil moist for at least 1-2 weeks
Avoid chemical pesticides that might harm them!
Tips for Success
Store in the fridge and use before expiry (they're alive!)
Apply as soon as possible after purchase
Reapply if pest problems persist
When to Use Them
Use nematodes if:
You see wilting plants caused by root pests
You have recurring lawn damage from grubs
You want an organic pest control method
